Abuja, Nigeria  – The Nigeria Police Force has responded to allegations from activist Deji Adeyanju, who claims that Inspector General of Police (IGP) is attempting to rewrite the Constitution by requesting information about the organizers and leaders of planned nationwide protests.

The police clarified that the IGP has always upheld citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of association and expression, emphasizing the importance of peaceful assembly. The request for details about protest organizers, locations, schedules, and routes is a standard procedure aimed at ensuring effective communication, participant safety, and preventing unlawful activities.

Referencing Section 45 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, the police explained that such measures are necessary for public safety, order, and the protection of other citizens' rights. Allowing unregistered groups to operate could threaten national peace and stability, as witnessed during the violent EndSARS protests in 2020.

The police urged Mr. Adeyanju and other organizers to avoid misleading the public and to collaborate in maintaining national security and well-being.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, reiterated the police's commitment to upholding constitutional responsibilities while ensuring public safety.
